Quantum degeneracy in atomic point contacts revealed by chemical force and conductance.

چکیده
Quantum degeneracy is an important concept in quantum mechanics with large implications to many processes in condensed matter. Here, we show the consequences of electron energy level degeneracy on the conductance and the chemical force between two bodies at the atomic scale. We propose a novel way in which a scanning probe microscope can detect the presence of degenerate states in atomic-sized contacts even at room temperature. The tunneling conductance G and chemical binding force F between two bodies both tend to decay exponentially with distance in a certain distance range, usually maintaining direct proportionality G∝F. However, we show that a square relation G∝F2 arises as a consequence of quantum degeneracy between the interacting frontier states of the scanning tip and a surface atom. We demonstrate this phenomenon on the Si(111)-(7×7) surface reconstruction where the Si adatom possesses a strongly localized dangling-bond state at the Fermi level.

Microscopic origin of the 1.3 G(0) conductance observed in oxygen-doped silver quantum point contacts.
Besides the peak at one conductance quantum, G0, two additional features at ∼0.4 G0 and ∼1.3 G0 have been observed in the conductance histograms of silver quantum point contacts at room temperature in ambient conditions. In order to understand such feature, here we investigate the electronic transport and mechanical properties of clean and oxygen-doped silver atomic contacts by employing the no...

We measure simultaneously force and conductance of Ag metal point-contacts under ambient conditions at room temperature. We observe the formation of contacts with a conductance close to 1 G0, the quantum of conductance, which can be attributed to a single-atom contact, similar to those formed by Au. We also find two additional conductance features at ∼0.4 G0 and ∼1.3 G0, which have been previou...
متن کاملSubgap spectroscopy of thermally excited quasiparticles in a Nb-contacted carbon nanotube quantum dot
We present electronic transport measurements of a single wall carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to Nb superconducting contacts. For temperatures comparable to the superconducting gap, peculiar transport features are observed inside the Coulomb blockade and superconducting energy gap regions. The observed temperature dependence can be explained in terms of sequential tunneling processes involv...
متن کاملEvidence for Saturation of Channel Transmission from Conductance Fluctuations in Atomic-Size Point Contacts
The conductance of atomic-size contacts has a small, random, voltage dependent component analogous to conductance fluctuations observed in diffusive wires. A new effect is observed in gold contacts, consisting of a marked suppression of these fluctuations when the conductance of the contact is close to integer multiples of the conductance quantum. Using a model based on the Landauer-Büttiker fo...
متن کاملConduction Channel Transmissions of Atomic-Size Aluminum Contacts
We have determined the individual transmission coefficients of Al quantum point contacts containing up to six conduction channels. The determination is based on a comparison of the highly nonlinear current-voltage characteristics in the superconducting state with the predictions of the theory for a single channel superconducting contact. We find that at least two channels contribute to the tran...
